On June 3, a member of Southern Housing Group’s Monday Group was recognised for his work in the community by attending the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
Supported housing resident Michael Shepherd has been Chairman of the Monday Group for six years, overseeing the work that the Monday Group does in supporting people with learning disabilities.
The Monday Group was founded in 2008 by Southern Housing Group’s Care and Supporting Independence Team. It is a resident-led project, supported by staff at Southern Housing Group, enabling people with disabilities to gain skills, knowledge and expertise through setting up projects which benefit others in the community. The Group’s projects include their social enterprise garden at Quarr Abbey, where they grow and sell their own produce, including fruit, vegetables and flowers.
When asked about the Queen’s Garden Party Michael said, “It was a long day but I enjoyed meeting lots of people and going to Buckingham Palace was great. It’s great to be recognised for the work that the Monday Group does.”
Attending the Garden Party with Michael, were two members of Southern Housing Group staff, Senior Learning Disability Activity Co-Worker Zoe Portsmouth and Personal Budget Worker Kevin Bower.
