The Group’s social value programme is our way of getting more for our customers from the companies who work with us. Find out how DW, Amber and Durkan have recently been going the extra mile for our customers.
The Group's social value programme is overseen by Employment Skills & Development Officer Raj Kaur, who is part of the Community Investment Team. Raj works closely with our contractors to ensure our customers are given additional benefits as part of our agreement with each company who works for us.
New community kitchens from DW Support Services
DW Support Services recently installed two new kitchens at Hindle House Community Centre in Hackney, east London.
The community centre is available for Hindle House residents to hire for events and activities, and its kitchen facilities were in need of an update.
Employment Skills & Development Officer Raj Kaur, who oversees the Group’s social value programme, explains:
The kitchen facilities were run down and struggling to support the regular events the centre hosted. Chris Weatherall, Contracts Manager for DW, agreed that DW would replace them and worked together with the Group’s Estates and Housing teams.
Two people from DW worked over two weeks to do a complete redecoration, including replacing all the cupboard and drawer units, the flooring, and the wall tiles. Now the kitchens are completely fit for purpose and provide a much improved working environment for colleagues and residents who use the centre.
Amber Construction helps sheltered housing customers at Brain Court
During current refurbishment works at Brain Court, one of the Group's sheltered housing schemes in Swindon, Amber Construction helped find the cause of an unpleasant smell and make sure residents here were safe and secure.
Derek Gay and Eva Kiebala from Amber, who are working onsite at Brain Court, alerted Scheme Services Coordinator Julie Sayer about a bad smell coming from somewhere in the scheme.
Derek and Eva helped Julie knock on everyone’s doors to make sure all the residents were all ok and there was nothing to worry about.
Derek climbed into loft hatches to find out where the smell was coming from, and after finding out it was coming from the kitchen of one of Brain Court’s frail residents, he and Eva cleaned the resident’s kitchen and removed all the rubbish from their property.
During the current hot weather, Derek and Eva are also helping to make sure residents are hydrated and are sitting in the shade if they’re out in the garden.
A royal good time for Lisgar Terrace, thanks to Durkan
Durkan donated £500 to residents at Lisgar Terrace in west London to help fund a tea and cake party in celebration of the recent royal wedding.
Durkan has been working at Lisgar Terrace for almost five years and they feel part of the local community here. They always look for opportunities to support residents, and the residents approached Dylan Regan from Durkan directly for help with the cost of putting on a royal wedding party at their community centre to help bring residents together.
Thank you to all our contractors who continue to help make life better for our customers through social value.
