We currently own and manage 19 community centres. These range from converted flats right through to larger, more modern purpose built or converted halls. A Community Centre Coordinator, within our SERD team, was appointed in 2010 to take responsibility for the management, development and promotion of the centres.
Three years on.
All halls now meet the health and safety regulations.
A backlog of repair issues is being addressed.
One hall, Amhurst Road in Hackney has been brought back into use, having sat empty for several years.
Two halls are being managed by resident social enterprises.
A new centralised booking system was introduced at the end of 2012.
As a result.
The amount the centres are used has increased by 300% and is expected to continue rising.
80% of the use supports community activity which directly benefits our residents.
Andy Roberts, Community Centre Coordinator in SERD, said, “We have worked with our residents and community groups to develop the centres to ensure we meet local needs. Feedback from residents has been really positive so far and it is great to see the centres used more. We look forward to continuing this work and increasing the amount of activities available to our residents.”
Any resident or member of the public can hire a centre either for a one-off event or as a regular booking for activities such as youth clubs, exercise classes, parties and bingo. Find out more about hiring a community centre.
