Southern Housing Group is investing £35m upgrading its historic Lisgar Terrace estate, redesigning homes to modern design standards that will improve living conditions for existing residents, while increasing the total number of homes by 20%.Originally built in 1928 as a Samuel Lewis Trust Estate, Southern Housing Group first secured planning permission to extend and renovate Lisgar Terrace back in 2010, and after four years of hard work, the first homes are now complete.
The extensive works include extending the 10 existing blocks, adding mansard (four sided) roofs, creating larger flats and installing lifts. Residents will see other benefits including much better insulation, double glazed sash windows, new larger kitchens and bathrooms, and landscaped court yard areas. Some original features have been preserved, such as the original staircases and external window balconettes, and we have reproduced elements of the building like the brick detailing above the entry doors and the smooth glazed bricks at ground level, all of which enhance the historical character of the buildings.
Dale Meredith, the Group’s Development Director has said: ”We are pleased to see completion of the first stage of the redevelopment of one of our oldest estates. This substantial investment will greatly benefit our resident’s by providing high quality modern flats and amenities.”
On Wednesday 11 June, we held an open day for the residents who will be moving into the first block to be completed. They all had a look around the show home, with one resident commenting: “I love the new design and I can’t wait to move into my new home.”
Phase 2, which comprises two more blocks creating 48 new homes, will commence immediately after phase 1 is complete.
Once the development is fully complete in 2020 the total number of homes will increase from 200 to 238, and will provide a number of different tenures.
