How the companies we work with help customers like Adam and Jamie
We often ask companies who work with us to provide extra benefits to our customers, including traineeships, as part of our social value programme. Adam Libonati and Jamie Watkins have recently completed traineeships with two of the companies we work with. We caught up with them to find out how their experiences have helped them.
Jamie, 22, spent four weeks with Breyer Group on a multi-trade traineeship. He worked alongside Breyer operatives undertaking responsive works in customers’ homes and communal areas, including roof tiling, plastering, felt roofing, and other repair work.
“My experience included a good mixture of everything. Sometimes I had the chance to work on my own, especially when a job involved bricklaying principles, which I’d had experience with.
“It’s been really useful learning in a multi-trade environment. I’d never done roofing before, which was probably the trickiest part because there’s a lot of health and safety involved. I once had to get onto four story high scaffolding which was shaky at first, but it definitely improved my fear of heights!
“I really enjoyed my role – sometimes a bit too much! – because I like moving around a lot, being in a different environment, and doing different things. One day I plan to own my own house, so being able to fix things myself will come in really handy.
“I would advise people to take any traineeship opportunities they can get. Most places are looking for experienced candidates and they want you to be able to show that you’re committed, and my time with Breyer has definitely helped me with that.”
Paula Arkell-Waller, Community Investment and Development Officer for Breyer Group, said: “Jamie has done really well and has had fantastic feedback. Traineeships give people the chance to experience the benefits and challenges of our industry first-hand, including the early starts and frequent traveling.
“Even if our trainees don’t end up working with us right after their traineeships, their experience still fills a skills shortage and allows them to go on to new opportunities. And, of course, they may work with us further down the line.
“Working with Southern Housing Group on its social value programme offers a lot of opportunity for cross-working with other organisations. It’s good to give people experience and help them get a job on their own.”
Jamie is currently applying for a full time, multi-trade role with Breyer, and should hear back soon if he’s successful.
Adam’s plumbing learning curve
Adam, 20, applied for a traineeship with Southern Maintenance Services (SMS) after seeing an ad for the role on our website. He spent four weeks working alongside experienced SMS staff during this plumbing traineeship.
“I worked in Essex and Whitechapel and everywhere in between. My role varied from day to day and I really enjoyed it. I did have previous experience with plumbing, but my traineeship really taught me more and everything I learnt has been useful. I got a lot of hands-on experience, as well as experience with talking to customers. There was a big learning curve, but otherwise it was smooth sailing with no real difficulties.
“I would advise anyone thinking of a traineeship to just do it! It’s a win-win situation and you’re going to come out of it with experience, no matter what.”
Adrian Lewis, SMS Operations Manager, oversaw Adam during his traineeship. He said: “Adam did really well. He listened, learnt, and really applied himself, and everyone he worked with was impressed by his positive attitude and the support he gave them.
“Social value is really important for Southern Housing Group. It focuses our service delivery and gives back to the communities and customers we serve. As we often require our external contracts to take part in our social value programme, I thought it was crucial that we also do the same.”
After his traineeship, Adam has now decided to apply for an apprenticeship with SMS.
