Two Horsham job seekers find work through work experience at Southern
Two job seekers involved in a work experience programme at Southern Housing Group, have secured full time jobs at the Group’s Service Centre.
Steven Daly and Mark Davey, both from Horsham, had both been part of the Jobcentre Plus Get Britain Working programme, which offers jobseekers work experience at local businesses, giving them the skills they need to move into work.
Recruitment Team Leader, Kerri Walkey said the scheme is beneficial to candidates and to the businesses that participate.
“We are really pleased to be involved in such a worthwhile programme and one that will ultimately change the lives of the people who participate,” she said.
“Steven and Mark started their work experience with Southern Housing Group in December last year and have both been very keen to work and to learn. When two jobs came up in our Service Centre, both Steven and Mark applied and after going through the interview process, they were both successful.”
Mark Davey (47) said that after having been made redundant, he struggled with lack of selfesteem while unemployed.
“I have worked all my adult life and I knew I had the skills to work in a customer service role but it was very difficult to find that type of job.
“I was offered an eight week placement at Southern Housing Group and at the end of that I applied for a full time position in the same role, which I was successful in getting. Since then I have been able to work in a great team environment, with helpful colleagues.
“I have now regained the confidence that I lost whilst unemployed, and have become a better person for it.”
Steven (19) said completing work experience was key to him being able to move into full time work.
“My confidence has grown and I’ve really enjoyed being part of a team,” he said.
“I’ve been able to gain a range of experience in the workplace by working on resident surveys and mutual exchanges, as well as shadowing people in other parts of the business to learn more.
“I was able to improve my communication skills and knowledge of working within a Service Centre environment, which ultimately helped me get this job as a Customer Service Adviser.”
Southern Housing Group will continue its involvement in the Get Britain Working programme to help local people like Mark and Steven to get the skills and experience they need to get into work.
