Southern Housing Group, one of the largest housing providers in southern England, has helped young residents gain accredited training for the first time.
The Group focused on offering accredited courses to the young people after it recognised that residents who engage in their programs would benefit from being able to communicate more effectively.*
The training saw young residents taking part to complete Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) units in Effective Communication Skills, Introduction to Mentoring and CV workshops.
Anabel Palmer, the Director of Social and Economic Regeneration at Southern Housing Group said, “They learnt all about how they can support their peers and other people in their community, and how to present, which certainly helped build their confidence and will be valuable for their future careers.
“It was great to have some of our young residents visit our head office for the day and not only get a feel for the what the workforce is like, but also leave knowing that they had truly achieved something.
“These training sessions are just an example of the range of services we provide to residents; we’ve also been supporting our residents to find work for years and provide other services like budgeting advice and support to help people manage their money.”
Joana Peixoto, who lives in Hammersmith and Fulham in London, said her Introduction to Mentoring training will be useful as she begins a career working with young people.
“The sessions have given me a better idea about my abilities to become a mentor, and have also taught me a lot about myself.
“I feel inspired to complete a counselling and mentoring accreditation and I also feel more comfortable and motivated to work with young and vulnerable people.”
More training is being planned for young residents in the coming year.
